Uncommon Pleasure (adult title)

Uncommon Pleasure
is an ADULT title by Anne Calhoun that contains two novellas that are linked.

There are several nice elements that give this story its depth and I particularly enjoyed the fixation with Sean's muscle car (blue Shelby Cobra) and the complications from Gretchen the dachshund.

My review:

Uncommon Pleasure” by Anne Calhoun is a volume containing a pair of steamy romance novellas featuring a couple of sexy military men and the women they are reluctantly interested in. “Over the Edge” features Ty Hendricks who has reluctantly maintained contact with his former Marine companions but he continues to keep himself closed off as he deals with the repercussions of a horrendous event during his military career. Geologist Lauren Kincaid is attracted to the taciturn man she notices as they both work on an oil rig but his determination to keep his distance and the weapons he is willing to employ to maintain his isolation may be more than she can tolerate. “All on the Line” continues the tale of Sean Winthrop, a colleague of Ty, who has his own very complicated relationship with the woman he rejected while he was deployed. Abby Simmons has moved on after the harsh brush-off from the Marine that she had given her heart to and she is struggling to balance all of the demands on her. The last thing she needs is Sean back in her life but he has a very different opinion.

This spicy read will undoubtedly irk some readers who dislike the cruelty inherent in both heroes but the very starkness of their characters is what makes them so alluring to me. Each of them definitely makes very serious errors but their unflinching self-honesty and their intense passion about all of the aspects of their lives gives them depth and humanity. The women in these stories are amazingly strong and flexible and the strong sense of self-worth that their actions reflect make them excellent opponents to the sometimes remarkably obtuse men they have become so attached to. The intense emotionalism and roller-coaster nature of the troubled relationships are offset by the unquestioned loyalty and sense of responsibility displayed in the lives of these military men who have a little trouble adjusting to the concept of having a woman exerting such influence on them. There are very erotic encounters in both novellas and a sizzling menage scene in each which severely complicates the lives of the respective participants but the attraction of this book for me is the raw emotion and glimpse into the sacrifices made by those who serve and the lasting impact of this service on their personal lives. None of these characters is perfect but they have value to those around them and people who are willing to fight for them and who remind them of what and who they have dedicated their lives to protect. Naturally, I hope to read more stories of these men and those around them after getting glimpses of several intriguing secondary characters.

A free read (for adults) and other erotic tales plus a couple of chat announcements

Success, finally!  The talented Randi Alexander has been trying to make her ADULT short story, A Gentleman and a Cowboy, available for free on Amazon but it has been a struggle for the past few weeks.  Please click on the cover above to be taken to Amazon (and, if by chance you should buy anything while you are wandering around, I will earn a small percentage for the referral, so thank you if that happens).

I have also been reading sizzling ADULT stories by the delightful Cassandra Carr and the prolific and impressive Cheyenne McCray.

Impact by Cassandra Carr is the start of her fantastic adult 'Buckin' Bull Riders' series which centers on a Dom who is trying to keep his BDSM proclivities discreet until a sexy novice submissive overwhelms his intentions.  Whew!  Definitely a read to warm up a cold day.  I will get a review written up this weekend.

Forbidden by Cheyenne McCray is the first book in her sizzling 'Seraphine Chronicles' which is an erotic paranormal series being re-released with beautiful new covers.  I have not had the pleasure of reading these before and am delighted to have the opportunity to read them.  Yum!

And....Tonight ONLY, April 17, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. PST...there are TWO different chats featuring another couple of my favorite erotic romance authors...MAYA BANKS and SHAYLA BLACK.

Shayla will be at the Writerspace chat at this link!
and Maya will be at the Romantic Crush Junkies Review (RCJR) at this link!

I have never visited the chats at RCJR so I don't know how they work but I will give advice about participating in the Writerspace chat.  It probably will be on protocol which means that they don't want everyone bombarding the poor author with lots of questions at once...so....WAIT your turn!  Type a question mark (?) and wait for the moderator (Lea or PaulaL or BadBarb) to call on you.  I usually type a '?' and then start typing my question WITHOUT hitting 'send' until I am called upon.  That way, you can check for typos and you don't make everyone wait while you type your question.  If you want to save a copy of the transcript of the chat there is a little icon to the far right at the bottom just above where you type your questions (next to the icons for bold, underline, etc.), click on it and it will open an new screen with everything that has been said from the time you entered the chatroom.  Click on it at various times throughout the chat to make sure you get what is being said most recently.  Hope to see you there!

A Kindle contest and a nice surprise in the mailbox

First, I want to offer my sympathies and good wishes for all of those touched by the horrific events at the Boston Marathon today

I like to visit the I Am A Reader, Not a Writer blog because there are always so many interesting books and giveaways featured.  Evidently, that blogger is not quite busy enough because there is a brand new one being started called FeedYourReader.com and to celebrate, a Kindle contest is being featured.  I apologize if this doesn't quite post the way it should be...I am always bemused by the arcane language needed for all of these things and I am easily frustrated trying to get things to look pretty, especially since I am in the middle of juggling other things.

And...I was delighted to receive the new Duffy Brown book in the mail today for review.  She is going to visit my blog (squee) early in May (on the 10th) and I am looking forward to reading her title, Killer in Crinolines which is the sequel to the delightful cozy mystery Iced Chiffon (my review for this title is at this link).

Flowers blooming and learning resources

Beautiful weather lately (if you can deal with the pollen that is being distributed by the winds) and we are already getting blooms!  My Mahalo iris plant has lovely reddish-violet blooms and I can't wait for the other iris to display its beautiful bi-colored blooms.. It's funny, I bought both plants from the local iris society through a serendipitous visit to...you guessed it...the library!  I cannot stress how useful one's local library is to anyone who wants to learn about new things and I am delighted that I learned about these new varieties of iris which are fortunately still alive despite the very harsh frosts we had this year.

I am VERY fortunate in that the library in my city belongs to a large county system and the next city down the freeway is only minutes away yet has its own collection that frequently receives and catalogs new books before my local library.  Needless to say, for awhile I had notoriety at both places but I have settled down to a dull roar because I have so many review books to write up and I am starting to receive more edits which keep me very busy.

Nonetheless, I remind you of the other resources that you can often obtain through your library, including but not limited to:  basic educational instruction and/or assistance with homework (particularly helpful when faced with children's homework nowadays), learning new languages through Mango (I was startled to show this aspect to a friend of mine and have her exclaim "Greek"--since I had not even noticed that this was one of the languages being offered), car repair resources such as the manuals for many makes and models of cars and many other things, and, at least at my local county library...access to the wonderful online university 'Ed2Go'.  I knew that there was no way to keep up with classes for this session given the number of titles I was juggling but I have managed to take several very useful classes through this...as long as I enroll through my library site, I can take up to three classes and use the code that I obtained through my library card.  What a great bargain and a wonderful way to keep the brain stimulated (and occasionally frustrated, lol).

And, speaking of flowers blooming...the poppies (Calilfornia's state flower) are well in bloom, just in time for our local Antelope Valley Poppy Festival which celebrates everything related to the California Poppy (except, perhaps, the drug related references, lol).  It will take place over the weekend of April 20 and 21 and usually includes live entertainment, lots of vendors and food, and interesting displays.  Alas, it is the same time as the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books so you can imagine which one I am most interested in...particularly since I have discovered that Robin Hobb and Raymond Feist are having a discussion!  (after all, I have poppies growing in the backyard...and I can always drag the hubby--and his breathing mask, poor guy--to the Poppy reserve, lol)

A free read, a request and a fun video (updated 4/17/13)

I am still juggling but am hopeful that I will have a few days to catch my breath (and catch up with my reviews) by the end of the week. There are several yummy reads just coming out recently or out soon including the ADULT titles, Cheyenne McCray's newest addition to her 'Riding Tall' series, Playing With You and her re-releases of the titles in the 'Seraphine Chronicles' and Maya Banks' Fever (which I warn you had mixed reviews)

Success!  Go get your FREE copy of Randi Alexander's A Gentleman and A Cowboy (click on the cover above!).  Thanks to everyone who helped get Amazon's attention!
Randi Alexander has a fun little ADULT short story that she is trying to make available for free at Amazon but for some reason, the powers that be have not responded to her requests that they match the price that it is available for at Smashwords ($0.00)!  It would be great if you would help her out by following the following instructions.  You can do this over and over again so if you can do it for several days in a row, that would be great!
Instructions from Randi:

1. Go to my book (A Gentleman and a Cowboy):  http://amzn.to/11H8MGB

Ok...one of the reasons I didn't make resolutions at the New Year is that I inevitably break them and then I feel guilty.  (Given the amount of weight I seem to be gaining, maybe I should have at least TRIED to make resolutions but oh, well!).  I was very entertained to read this post by author Carolyn Brown...if you don't want to read the article itself and enjoy this talented author's wry humor...at least click on the video, it is amazing what lengths may be needed to encourage some of us to exercise and feel good about it, lol.  Link.

Spring has sprung

And, unfortunately, it is definitely allergy season.  I don't suffer as much as my poor hubby who has gone through years of allergy shots and, although much improved, is really having trouble when he goes outside this year.

I am thrilled because the poppies are already in bloom (we live in the city that celebrates the California state flower and we are near the Antelope Valley Calfornia Poppy Reserve), my iris are growing stems and should bloom in a few weeks and many things are turning green.  I am less thrilled because the aphids, caterpillars and other garden pests are also thriving and I was pretty disturbed to discover all of them flourishing when I attempted to pick collard greens to cook for my great-aunt yesterday.  I am fortunate that at 95 years of age, she has very simplistic tastes and all she asks is that I cook them with a little onion and garlic.  Even I can manage that...although I did forget to look at the time because I was reading one of my editing manuscripts so I had to keep poking the greens to assess their tenderness.

My great-aunt, Pilar, is a very fascinating person who is still very coherent and was still using public transportation as recently as a year ago.  It is amazing to talk with her and hear about her travails when she and others were imprisoned in a concentration camp in the Philippines.  Thankfully, she was eventually freed and brought to the United States where she raised a wonderful family and has enriched many lives with her stories and her pragmatic advice.  And yum, the lumpia (Filipino eggroll) that I blogged about a few months ago, was made with her very expert assistance...I am in the process of coaxing her to repeat the experience, lol.

Speaking of yummy food...

Don't forget to enter at Lisa Renee Jones' blog Monday through Friday for your chance at fun kitchen-related items (and yummy recipes).  Please click this link.  Make sure you stop at the entry for Saturday, April 5 at this link just so you can have your chuckle for the day.  If you leave a comment, please mention that ELF, The Reading Addict sent you and if you win, I will too!

Lisa's thrilling and erotic romantic suspense tale, If I Were You, is on sale at all e-tailers, including Amazon (click on cover for link)

Wrecked by Shiloh Walker

Whatever happened to Abigale Applegate?

She’s been wondering the same thing.

With her Hollywood dreams long gone, Abigale now has a nice, neat, uncomplicated life—until the day her perfect fiancé needs to talk. Dumped, a little more than shattered, and totally confused, Abigale turns to Zach, her best friend since forever, to help her pick up the pieces. He does it with a gift—a copy of Wreck This Journal. She can vent her frustrations, and sketch out a new plan. Zach just hopes he’s part of it. Because he’s been in love with Abigale his entire life.

When the journal falls into Zach’s hands, he discovers Abigale wants a new man. And fast. Nothing more than a hot distraction. Zach has a strategy, too. He’s going to be that man. It’s his last chance. Abigale might be out to shake up her life, but Zach’s out to reinvent it. Now, all he has to do is convince Abigale that life can go as planned.

Excerpt (used with permission from Shiloh Walker ©ShilohWalker)
Wine would have been a good idea, Abby thought.
Stretched out on her belly, she closed her eyes and tried to think about anything but the pain. Digging her nails into her palms, she tried to zone out.
“You okay?”
Zach’s hands on her weren’t helping her zone out, she decided.  It was one hell of a distraction, but it wasn’t helping her zone out.
Swallowing the knot in her throat, she croaked out, “I’m as good as I think I can expect to be.”
“And how good is that?”
“Lousy.”
He laughed a little.  “Why don’t you talk to me?  We’re halfway done,” he said.  “If you talk, you’ll get distracted and it will be done before you know it.”
“Okay.”  She scrunched her eyes tightly closed and tried to think of something to say.  Her mind was blank.  “Shit. I don’t know what to talk about.”
“You always have something to talk about,” he teased, his voice low and easy and she knew even without looking at him that he was smiling.
“Not right now I don’t.”  Well, she could think of a thing or two.  But those things were really things she could say.  Were they?  No. She’d thought this through.  She wasn’t going down that road with Zach.
“Okay.  I’ll help.  What is this new life plan you’ve got laid out? Besides the tattoo here?”
I plan on flipping my life upside down–
She bit her lip to keep from blurting that out.  That would make him worry.  She loved him dearly and she didn’t need him worrying about her right now.  “It’s not a life plan exactly.  It’s just a for-now plan,” she said slowly.  “Some things to keep me distracted until I figure out what I’m going to do with myself.  There’s the tattoo thing, which you’re obviously helping with.  I’m going to try to stop worrying so much. One of them, though…I plan on calling up Roger and telling him off.”
He grunted.  “Good plan.”  Something soft brushed against her lower back and she hissed a little.
Damn it, that hurt.  It felt like something was slicing right through her skin.
Distraction.  Talk, damn it.  About anything.
“I don’t get it,” she said softly, some of the confusion and pain breaking free.  “I mean… I thought he loved me.  How could he love me and walk away like that?  Over the life I used to have?  That’s what it’s all about.  I used to be an actress.  I’m not anymore—I haven’t been for years and I’m happy with that.  How can he not see that?  If he loved me, wouldn’t he be able to see that I don’t want to act anymore?”
Zach didn’t answer.
Turning her head, she peered over her shoulder at him.
He had his head bowed, the gold-streaked strands falling down and hiding his features from her.
“Zach?”
He sighed.  “Do you really want to hear what I have to say about this right now, sugar?”
“I always want to hear what you have to say.”
“Okay.”  He used the cloth again on her back and then bent down, staring at her skin like there was nothing else in the world but her back and the design he was inking onto her flesh.  “He never loved you.”
It was a strike, square to her heart.
She closed her eyes.
“If he loved you, he wouldn’t treat you the way he did.  When you walked into a room, it would have showed on his face…if he really loved you.  Either he’d been so busy staring at you because he just had to see you, or he would have been looking away so nobody could see it.  Except he was going to marry you–you were his and he had every right to let the world see how he felt.”  Zach dabbed at her back again, still focused on the work.
She was almost glad of the pain now, because it was easier to think about how much it hurt than to think about what he had to say.
“But when you walked into a room, that f’ing prick was too busy either messing with his damned gadgets or looking at everybody else to see what they thought about you.  He was in love with the idea of having Kate the cutie on his arm.  But he never loved you.”
He paused what he doing and for a brief second, the world fell away as he looked up and met her eyes.  “He never loved you, and the son of a bitch sure as hell didn’t deserve you, sugar.”
Her heart slammed against her ribs as his blue gaze held hers.
And then, as it felt like all the oxygen in the room had dwindled away, he turned his attention back to the task at hand.
It felt like he was flaying the flesh from her bones.  And she decided that was just fine, because now she needed thatdistraction.
Was he right, she wondered?  Had Roger ever loved her at all?
And more importantly…had she loved him?

“Okay, here are the important things,” Zach said as he studied the design.  It was cute, sexy as hell and if he found out another guy was the one who got to press his lips to that dragonfly where it curved low over the flare of her left hip, he thought he just might go insane.  “I’ll send you home with some instructions on how to care for it, but you need to make sure you keep it clean.  No scrubbing at it or anything–you need to be gentle when you wash it, but keep it clean.  I’ve got some ointment I’ll send home with you and I’ll go into detail about using that, too.”
She was still staring at it over her shoulder in the mirror.  Worrying her lower lip with her teeth and eying the dragonfly like she expected it to take flight or something.
“I need to get the bandage on,” he said softly.
“What?  Oh.”
She continued to stand there and he reached up, pressed his hand between her shoulder blades.  “Lean forward a little.”
Hunger screamed, jerking on the leash inside him as he eased the waistband of her skirt just a little lower so he could get the bandage in place.  Bent over the table like that, he could so easily imagine pulling the hem of the skirt up. Slipping his hand between her thighs.  Would she sigh?  Moan?
No.  This was Abby and she’d freak the hell out and then she’d run away and he’d lose her–
A soft, shaky sigh caught his attention as he smoothed the bandage down. Keeping his head bowed, he checked the mirror from under his lashes and his knees almost buckled.
Abby was staring at their reflection and her face was flushed.
What. The. Hell.
Abruptly, he stepped back and moved away.  If he didn’t move away immediately, he was going to grab her and do things he never should do to his best friend.  The woman he loved.  That was the problem.  He’d loved her for too long and he was misreading the signals and–
“Do you really think all that’s true?  About Roger?”
Hearing that shithead’s name on her lips snapped his temper. He turned around and glared at her.  “If I didn’t think that was the case, Abs, I wouldn’t have said it.  He’s an egotistical, arrogant piece of work and he never loved you.  You deserved a hell of a lot better and I knew it all along.  But he was what you wanted so who in the hell was I to say any different?”
“You’re my best friend,” she said quietly.
“Shit.” He went to pass a hand over his face and stopped.  He still had his gloves on.  Stripping them off, he tossed them into the red trash can near the door and headed over start cleaning up.  “Yes.  I am.  You asked me what I thought and I told you.  But I can’t tell you what is in that fucker’s head.  You can always ask him when you call him to tell him off, although I doubt he’ll tell you the truth.  He doesn’t even see the truth anyway.”
“Have you ever been in love?”
In the middle of gathering up his supplies, he paused.  Zach closed his eyes and started to mouth every single foul, nasty curse he could think of.  He had four brothers.  He could think of a lot of cuss words.  Half way through one that involved anatomical improbabilities and a goat, a hand touched his shoulder.
“Zach?”
Damn it, he couldn’t do this.  Moving away, he started grabbing shit at random.  Dumping trash, slamming the tools here, there.  Being careless with them, but he couldn’t look at her yet.  If he did, she might see–
He went to dump the trash and turned around.
Abby was right there, dark brown eyes locked on his face, her shirt still knotted just under her breasts, leaving her belly bare.
“What is this?” she teased.  “You make me play twenty questions all the time.”
Edging around her, he focused on cleaning up.  “I’m thirty-two years old, Abby.  Yeah.  I’ve been in love,” he said, keeping his voice flat and his eyes on the task at hand.  “It didn’t work out.”
“Why not?”
“She never seemed to notice that I was staring at her when she walked into the room."
